At Home with SUPESU: Sandy

Hong Kong-born Canadian and founder of SUPESU. Sandy is a digital nomad, global citizen, and maximum comfort lover.

June 1, 2023

Welcome to our first ever journal series, At Home with SUPESU features interviews with a series of individuals from all walks of life. Here to kick start the series is our founder Sandy with what At Home with SUPESU means to her.

Q. Tell us about you and your life. It’s always been a dream to start my own fashion brand. My parents are also entrepreneurs so the idea of being one myself started even before I turned 5. After about a decade of gaining as much relevant experience and resources as I could, I took the leap of faith to start my own brand.

Shockingly, a few months later, the pandemic happened. I was living in Shanghai at the time and was on a 10-day vacation in Taiwan when it hit. I ended up moving to Vietnam for 3 years to “escape the virus” and restructured the business so I could manage, operate, and design remotely. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone. It was in Vietnam that we came up with SUPESU’s motto - Confidence is Comfort ®

It’s a wonderful mission to work towards every day, not only for myself but also to share with the world. The message offers the opportunity to challenge any preconceptions of confidence and re-evaluate what it means to be truly comfortable with oneself - in all situations. Since then, I’ve embraced the flexibilities a digital nomad life brings. It has its own challenges, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. It forces me to constantly embody an open mindset and allows me to welcome the world with all its beautiful opportunities.

Q. What are your at home routines to create a peaceful environment where you can focus, unwind? My home is all over the place. It can be at different hotels, short-term rentals, at our new SUPESU Studio in Toronto or friends'/family’s homes. In a sense, my home routine is also nomadic. After reading “Change Your Schedule, Change Your Life” by Dr. Suhas Kshirsager and Michelle Seaton, and watching the cute anime series, “Cells At Work” by Akane Shimizu, I focus on waking up early, exercising, eating, and sleeping on time. I want give the cute little cells that work so hard in my body an easier environment to live in. A good skin and haircare routine is also so key. To unwind, I meditate and journal quite often. It helps me create space and recenter myself when everything around me is changing all the time.

Confidence is Comfort.

Q. Do you prefer to unwind and retreat at home or entertain?

In my 20’s, I loved to entertain and host large gatherings in great spaces. Seeing people from all walks of life having a great time and having interesting conversations with each other filled me with joy.

It may be because of covid or age, now I prefer to unwind at home wherever that may be. So long as I have my Bose noise-cancellation headphones, meditation apps (Healthy Minds + Headspace), audiobooks, my phone, internet and good company, either with myself or with close friends and family, I’m at peace.

Who knows. Maybe I will experience another change in preference a few years down the line ~

Q. What are the most important elements of your home that make you feel at home and express yourself in your space?

I need to feel comfortable wherever I am.  I focus on the basics, which to me are luxuries, such as making the time to train a healthy mind filled with mindfulness and compassion. Other essential basics include filtered water, clean air, my breakfast essentials, and comfy clothes that I can wear on repeat.  It sounds silly to be grateful for clean air, but after years of living abroad, having access to clean air and water is truly a gift.  I've learned to see that a lot of happiness is derived from appreciating the small things in life. This is actually one of the major motivators of why I'm so keen on building a brand with sustainable practices. Imagine a world without clean air and water (and the trees too)! That would be no bueno.

If you really want to go the whole nine yards, my life is really complete when I have a comfy bed, my slippers, moisturizing skincare, root-enhancing haircare, high-speed internet, cute nearby cafes, good accessible company and my “office in a bag”.

Q. What wisdom can you impart for others on creating a haven or an atmosphere of inspiration in your home? Spend quality time to think deeply on what brings you contentment and pursue it with fire. Life is too short!

Identify those key essential items or routines in your life that help make your life easier. They should be things, habits, thought processes, experiences or methods of living that help you create more cognitive space for you to discover and focus on what truly matters to you.

Once you’ve figured that out, you’ll have created an inspirational haven of your own, wherever your home may be.

Q. What are some things that have helped you find your haven? Good question… it would have to relate to Confidence is Comfort, our brand’s motto :)  Some things that have helped me find my haven include quality and compassionate relationships, comfy clothes with thoughtful details, a healthy lifestyle and lastly, and a hearty growth mindset.

I prioritize working on improving my personal mindfulness so I can show up better for my relationships.  After all, we're at our most comfortable when we are with those that we love the most, whether that be with ourselves or with others.

Q. What's going on in this picture?
Oh, this is a picture of my sister and I in Vancouver, Canada.  Running brand can offer a great excuse to have some fun with your loved ones. I mean... why not, right?  She loves her Serena Slip Dress and brings it everywhere to our family outings.  It makes me so happy!

Oh, and by the way, this picture with my sister was taken by Jamie Poh.  She was my sister's wedding photographer but now focuses mainly on personal and commercial shoots.  She made us feel comfortable during the shoot when both my sister and I are naturally awkward people. If you're ever in Vancouver and in need of an awesome photographer, hit her up!

Q. What are some products you have in your home you couldn’t live without? And, why are they meaningful to you? Ooo this is going to seem like a lot, but they are really all the material things that I can't live without...and yes, all of the essentials listed below fit into one suitcase!

My breakfast essentials help set me up for the day. These include flax, hemp seeds, cinnamon, quality probiotics and multivitamins, eggs, avocado, leafy veggies, carrots, salmon or white fish, or citrus and berries.  I pack around my organic flax, hemp seed and probiotics since there is a chance that different countries might not sell them at their local grocery stores!

My travel wardrobe must be comfy. Managing a business requires a lot of attention (some can say it’s comparable to being a mommy). I need those “one and done” pieces that look and feel good to wear. Being physically comfy keeps me confident so I can spend more time focusing on what matters most to me.

I usually have a few SUPESU pieces on me and rotate amongst the collection in different cities or weather climates. Receiving samples from the team for a fit and quality check also plays a factor into my wardrobe for the next few months!

My workout essentials
enable me to keep my body functioning properly. These include runners, a massage ball or roller, a yoga mat for pilates, and something for weights like a 5L water bottle for weightlifting usually suffices.

My skin and haircare essentials remind me daily that things can easily fade without proper care and maintenance! For skin, I rotate between brands quite frequently to keep my skin on its toes, for lack of a better phrase!

I usually have one or more moisturizers and a mineral sunscreen. I use vitamin C and retinol on an on/off basis.

For hair, I use a DIY rosemary, and jojoba oil concoction that I mix for hair growth, a bamboo comb with round bristles for a daily head/hair massage, and natural shampoo and conditioner.

Q. How does your nomadic lifestyle and/or philosophy apply to your work with SUPESU?
Wow, this is a tough one. For SUPESU, I really try to aim for three words: cute, simple and comfort. With a nomadic lifestyle, it encourages me to seek out new and challenging experiences. It pushes me to not only practice adapting to change, but welcome it. It also doesn’t help that I love asking “why?” and solving problems.

My natural affinity for such complexities can sometimes get me into a pickle! And when I'm in these pickles, the best way to handle them is with a sense of lightheartedness. Operating a brand can be a challenging task, and it certainly helps balance it out when the brand is all about: Cute. Simple. Comfort.

This is how our team works as well. As cheesy as it sounds, I’ve been caught telling the team, “Aim for professional ninja-ism. Keep things simple and don’t be shy to let your inner cuteness (or silliness) shine!” Fashion can be so serious and it doesn't have to be. Life is too short! A nomadic life doesn’t work for everyone, but anyone can possess a growth mindset to achieve whatever their heart or mind desires - all the while, staying true to cute, living simply, and feeling confidently comfortable.

On another note, since I’m so practical, for anyone who is wondering the actual logistics of it all…

My office in a bag is where all the SUPESU magic happens! It includes my laptop, a lightweight retractable laptop stand for good posture, my ergonomic mouse for small hands or additional trackpad, my cell phone, a cell phone stand, a back/posture corrector, chargers and a universal adapter. Because I spend so much time in front of my computer in different environments, any tool that can help me preserve a good posture is gold. My design and illustration instructor once told me, "Your workstation is where you’ll spend most of your time. Take the time to set it up properly!"

Q. What's your mantra?

Confidence is Comfort : )  It's a lot of hard work, but it's so worth it!
